Who is Funke Akindele?

Akindele-Bello Olufunke Ayotunde (born August 24, 1977) is a gifted Nigerian film actress, businesswoman, and producer who is more commonly known by the names Funke Akindele and Jenifa. 

From 1998 to 2002, she was a cast member on the sitcom I Need to Know. In 2009, she was honored with the Africa Movie Academy Award for Best Actress in a Leading Role. 

Her role in the film Jenifa propelled her to prominence and garnered her the moniker Jenifa. Due to the Omo Ghetto trilogy, her notoriety increased.

Funke Akindele was awarded the 2016 Africa Magic Viewers’ Choice Award for Best Actress in a Comedy for her performance as the protagonist in the show Jenifa’s Diary.

Her sibling count is three; two of her siblings are females and one is boy. Her father is a retired school principal, whereas her mother is a physician. Additionally, sister Abimbola Maria Akindele is her sibling.

Where did Funke Akindele schooled?

Akindele Funke was a student at Grace Children School in Gbagada, Lagos State. An Ordinary National Diploma (OND) in Mass Communication was awarded to her by Moshood Abiola Polytechnic, formerly Ogun State Polytechnic. A law degree was bestowed upon her by the University of Lagos.

Career

Funke Akindele rose to prominence after starring from 1998 to 2002 in the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA)-sponsored sitcom I Need to Know. She portrayed Bisi, an intelligent and inquisitive secondary school pupil.  Funke Akindele’s breakthrough performance was in the 2008 film Jenifa.

A controversy erupted in January 2018 when it was  reported that Funke Akindele, who was listed as a cast member on IMDb, would make her Hollywood debut in Marvel’s Avengers: Infinity War.

Citing IMDb, the mainstream Nigerian press reported that Jenifa was scheduled to portray the guard Dora Milaje in Infinity War. Following several weeks passed, Genevieve Nnaji, a fellow Nigerian actress, assumed her position; Funke Akindele’s upload was deemed tainted.

The Senate President and chair of the National Assembly, Dr. Bukola Saraki, advised Marvel Studios in February 2018 to include Funke Akindele in Infinity War.

During an interview in July 2016, Funke Akindele lamented the decline of her involvement in the Yoruba film industry as a result of piracy.

In the ongoing hit television series Jenifa’s Diary, Funke Akindele portrays the primary character alongside Fisayo Ajisola, Falz, Juliana Olayode, and Aderounmu Adejumoke. 

It is an offshoot of the motion picture Jenifa. In the 2018 comedy Moms at War, Omoni Oboli and Funke Akindele star. 

Funke Akindele debuted Aiyetoro Town, a derivative of her popular television series Jenifa’s Diary, on the Internet in July 2019. She represents Scene One Film Production as its CEO. In 2019, she debuted as a director with the political drama film Your Excellency.

Private Life

Funke Akindele entered into matrimony with Adeola Kehinde Oloyede on May 26, 2012. In July 2013, the couple separated on the grounds of irreconcilable differences.  In May 2016, Funke Akindele wed Nigerian rapper JJC Skillz in London. 

Funke Akindele is the parent of three children, including her identical, Tamira Bello, Benito Bello, and Josiah Bello.

In August 2017, her pregnancy speculations ranked among the most-searched results on the Google search engine. Since December 2018, when she gave birth to twin boys, Funke Akindele has amassed a number of stepchildren.

The Jenifa Foundation, a non-governmental organization directed by Funke Akindele, endeavors to impart vocational skills to young individuals.
